A SARE Sustainable Agricultural Research and Education Professional Development Project of UConn, UMASS, and URI

A presentation and discussion on health care for our food animals and specifically the use of antibiotics and the growing concerns about antibiotic resistance.  The use of antibiotics in agriculture, particularly in food-producing animals, is pervasive and represents the overwhelming majority of antibiotic use worldwide. Eighty percent of all antibiotics sold in the U.S. are used in food animal production systems. New FDA and USDA regulations are moving toward reducing the use of antibiotics in agriculture.  Changes in animal production systems can both prevent disease and reduce the need for antibiotics.
